The Southernmost Point in the United States
Southpoint is the southernmost point in the United States (don't let anyone tell you it's in Florida, it isn't). This was the likely landing point for the first Hawaiians upon their arrival from Polynesia. Many scientists believe these original inhabitants may have been following the migrating golden plover, which is a tiny bird that migrates between Alaska and the South Pacific Islands each year, with a stopover in Hawaii. It is often very windy out here, so hold onto your hats. |
