Linda's Guide to the Big Island: Southpoint

The Southernmost Point in the United States

Southpoint is the southernmost point in the United States (don't let anyone tell you it's in Florida, it isn't). This was the likely landing point for the first Hawaiians upon their arrival from Polynesia. Many scientists believe these original inhabitants may have been following the migrating golden plover, which is a tiny bird that migrates between Alaska and the South Pacific Islands each year, with a stopover in Hawaii. It is often very windy out here, so hold onto your hats.

Directions: take Hwy 11 South to Southpoint Road (between mile markers 69 and 70), follow for approximately 4 miles, turn right at the fork in the road (do not go to the “visitor’s center” as it does not exist), and park near the boat hoists and walk down to the point. The road to the point is paved and in good condition. Swimming here is not advised as strong currents might just sweep you off to the South Pacific.
