Linda's Guide to the Big Island: Puna District

If you have an extra day or half-day to fill, drive south along to the beaches in the Puna district. This was one of my favorite excursions and only took a half-day. Later in the afternoon, we went back to the volcano for some sunset viewing, followed by an outstanding dinner at the Kilauea Lodge & Restaurant. If we have the chance to visit again, I’d definitely spend an evening at the Kilauea Lodge for its proximity to the volcano.

Take Hwy 130 south and turn onto Hwy 132 south after the town of Pahoa (Pahoa is a tiny town and easy to miss). Lava Tree State Monument is on Hwy 132 and is worth a stop. It is a small park and there are some amazing petrified trees from previous lava flows. There are also restroom facilities here. Continue along Hwy 132 until you cross Hwy 137.

Lava Tree

When you cross Hwy 137, the road will turn into a well-kept gravel/dirt road that leads to the Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse. If you drive a little faster (like 25mph instead of 10mph) the road will actually seem less bumpy. We tried it and it worked. If it’s been raining heavily and/or the road has developed a lot of potholes, definitely slow down. Remember, you are the one responsible for your rental car, not us. Beyond the lighthouse there are some really nasty 4x4 roads that lead to some pretty cool lookouts and rocky beaches/swimming holes. Even if you have a 4x4 truck, unless you are an experienced off-road driver, and have the insurance to back you up, I would not recommend this drive. It is far safer, to park your car, pack a hat, sunscreen, and water and walk the mile or two down the road to Champagne Pond. Remember not to leave anything in your car, as break-ins are likely if you do so.
